Reverb Broads: Books, Flowers & Porch

In theory, I’m participating this month in the Reverb Broads blogging challenge (I say “in theory” because today is June 12 and so far the only post I’ve written is one explaining that we don’t need to apologize for our failure to keep up. Good thing, too, or I’d have to be hella sorry). So……I thought I’d go ahead and answer the post from June 8 because a) it’s from Kristen and b) I need a reason to test out my new camera. Here’s the prompt: “What are your favorite decorative items/pieces of furniture/household features?”

Truth is, I’m not much of a decorator as I’d much rather be reading or playing with the computer than trolling around stores looking for antiques. Besides, we don’t have a lot of room for decorations, as our house is stuffed full with books. Books are THE major item in our house. There are a lot of them (around 4,500 — for realz!) and they are everywhere:

Chick lit collection in my study

Books in the dining room

More books in the guest/TV room

See? That’s just a few — there are many book, but how many photos of books do you want to look at? I love them — I can’t imagine living without books surrounding me.

My other favorite thing about our house is our porch (this was a theme for many of the Reverb Broads). Porch season in Missouri isn’t nearly long enough, but I spend every second I can out here (in fact, I am writing this on the porch):

Finally, while I tend to spend my disposable income on books, travel, and gadgets as opposed to decorative objects, the one thing that I do love to have around the house other than books is fresh flowers. As soon as I started earning enough to afford it, I put fresh flowers permanently on my shopping list. Trader Joe’s is my favorite place to find reasonably-priced flowers that last for a long time.
