While I don’t go much for soul talk, I can say that I am lucky enough to share a household with a wonderful cook and live in a city with great restaurants, so I definitely come in for my share of fabulous meals. This prompt makes me want to write about the sundae again, but that would definitely be cheating, so I won’t.
My favorite annual meal is the one I always request for my birthday and refer to as the chicken — it’s Elizabeth David’s Poulet au Gratin a la Savoyarde from her French Provincial Cooking book and is simply amazing. After roasting a chicken, you remove it from the oven, cut in half, cover with a sauce made from cream, tarragon and Gruyere, sprinkle with bread crumbs and then return briefly to the oven. Words simply cannot describe the perfection that is this meal. I look forward to it every January. If you or someone you know is an ambitious cook, this is a book I highly recommend after having eaten many delicious meals from it.
Note: This is my response to the #reverb10 prompt for December 26. #reverb10 is an annual event and online initiative to reflect on your year and manifest what’s next. Each day has a prompt. Today’s prompt is: “Soul food. What did you eat this year that you will never forget? What went into your mouth & touched your soul?”
