The answer to what name I would use if I could introduce myself to strangers as another name is easy — I would use the name Beth as it’s what I am frequently called by both people who know me well and those who are relative strangers. My full name is Brenda Bethman, but for some reasons, folks have a hard time remembering Brenda and, thanks to the last name, call me Beth instead. Just about EVERYONE I know has done it at some point (in college, I in fact had friends who called me nothing but Beth. When I called them, I would say “hi, it’s Beth” as it was easier. My first year advisor also never figured out that my first name was really Brenda. She called me Beth for four years as well). My mother wanted to name me Elizabeth, but my father objected as he thought Beth Bethman sounded silly. It’s too bad mom didn’t win that argument.
Note: This is my response to the #reverb10 prompt for December 23. #reverb10 is an annual event and online initiative to reflect on your year and manifest what’s next. Each day has a prompt. Today’s prompt is: “New name. Let’s meet again, for the first time. If you could introduce yourself to strangers by another name for just one day, what would it be and why?”
