Barbie Video Girl

Those who know me know that it’s no secret that I have a complicated love/hate relationship with Barbie. On the one hand, I played with her endlessly growing up and she was always in charge, bossing around Ken. So in some ways Barbie helped me become a feminist. And she was an astronaut long before other women were — not to mention President. So there’s a liberatory side to Barbie that I just love. Finally, I am truly fascinated at the way the folks at Mattel have leveraged the Barbie brand on social media. Barbie is everywhere: Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, blogging. She’s even on Foursquare, so we know Barbie’s a true social media geek.

On the other hand, there’s the everything pink, the reference to the “girlie aisle of your local Toys r’ Us” on the Facebook post introducing the video below, and the whole body image thing. (Although on that issue, I mostly agree with the brilliant Courtney Martin, but still find the proportions disturbing).

Nonetheless, I will confess that this video made my day and I wanted to share it with you. Leave your thoughts about Barbie and the video in the comments.

  1. I forgot to add that if you’ve never gone to the Barbie Facebook page and clicked on the “Flip Me” button at the top of the Ken pen (scroll down a bit and it’s on the left), you really should do so.
